SSH - Keeping Our Computer Secrets Safe
Let's talk about SSH, which is a super cool tool that helps keep our secrets safe when we're communicating with other computers remotely.
SSH stands for Secure Shell, and it's a highly secure network protocol that lets us access and manage network devices and servers remotely, all while making sure our data stays safe and private.
So, let's imagine we have a secret clubhouse with a special lock that only our friends can open. But what if our friend is far away? How can we securely send them the key over the internet? That's where SSH comes in! It's like a magical way to send the key to our friend's computer securely.
Using SSH in Linux is pretty easy! To get started, simply open the terminal on your local machine by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + T
. Then, use the following command syntax: ssh username@hostname
. Replace "username" with the username on the remote system, and "hostname" with the IP address or domain name of the remote server.
If you're connecting to the server for the first time, SSH might display a message asking you to confirm the authenticity of the host by displaying a fingerprint. Don't worry, this is just a security measure to make sure you're connecting to the intended server. Simply type 'yes' to confirm.
If you're using password-based authentication, the system will prompt you to enter your password. If you're using key-based authentication, it may ask you to unlock your private key.
Once you're authenticated, you'll be granted access to the command line interface of the remote system. You can now execute commands on the remote system just as if you were physically present! When you're done, simply type exit to exit the SSH session.
